New Driver Training
The state of Connecticut requires all new drivers under the age of 18 to complete 30 hours of classroom training at a licensed school (commercial driving or secondary) or 22 hours of classroom training at home plus an 8 hour Safe Driving Practices course at a licensed school (commercial driving or secondary). All new drivers must also successfully complete 40 hours of practice driving (behind-the-wheel).
Learner permit holders are eligible to apply for a driver's license after they have held the permit for at least 120 days if they completed the 30 hours of classroom instruction and 8 of the 40 hours of behind-the-wheel practice driving with a Connecticut licensed commercial/secondary driving school. Learner permit holders who completed the 22 hours of home training will be eligible to take the test after holding the permit for 180 days.
